Cloth Diapering Greener Living House & Home

Can EnviroKlenz Get Rid of Cloth Diaper and Laundry Stink?

Stink! Anyone with a front loader washing machine knows just how smelly the inside of your machine can get.

When we first got our new house with the new high efficiency washer and dryer, I was pretty stoked. Saving energy and water sounded great to me (and I thought all those fancy buttons were spiffy too!). But it didn’t take long to notice a not so great smell coming out of the drum. Turns out the lower water level and the airtight seal on the front loading door are a breeding ground for bacteria and stink. I’ve found some tips that help, like running a hot water load regularly and leaving the door open between uses – why oh why haven’t I learned not to bang my knees into the open door yet? – but the stink still lingers and sometimes I need a little extra help to kick the funk out.

Not just anything will do though. Anything I use in my home needs to meet three criteria.

  • Is it effective?
  • Is it safe for my kids and pets?
  • Is it safe for our planet?

I was recently tipped off to a company with these same goals. Instead of artificial fragrances with phthalates or parabens to cover up smells around the house, EnviroKlenz uses non-toxic, non-polluting, and environmentally friendly magnesium, titanium dioxide, and zinc oxide to neutralize and eliminate them. One cycle with EnviroKlenz’ Washing Machine Deodorizer and Cleaner worked like a dream to get my washing machine fresh and stink-free, just like new!

Cloth Diaper & Laundry Stink

But what about the stuff that goes inside the washing machine? I know that for many of us, the stinkiest thing that goes in the washing machine is cloth diaper laundry. We wanted to see how EnviroKlenz’ Laundry Enhancer would handle dirty diapers, so for the past several weeks, Sam has been putting it to the test with her very stinkiest loads of diapers. Here’s what Sam had to say:

Pee-ew!

First, a note about diaper laundry: your diapers should not have a foul odor after a completed wash routine. If they do, there may be an issue with your washing machine or the process and/or products you’re using. For the sake of your baby’s most sensitive areas (and everyone’s olfactory senses) you likely need to do some investigative work to get to the root of your stink problem. Although EnviroKlenz Laundry Enhancer does break down these odors, the products are designed to do more than just that. They reduce harmful and irritating chemical fragrances.

I’m thankful that no one in my family suffers from Multiple Chemical Sensitivities (MCS), but EnviroKlenz has developed their products with these people in mind. That coworker who reports you to your manager every time you wear perfume to work isn’t doing it to be a pain. They’re doing it because they’re in pain. This laundry enhancer doesn’t get rid of odors by masking them with more fragrance; it eliminates them at a chemical level.

The best load of cloth diaper laundry should come out smelling like absolutely nothing. Not Mountain Fresh, Springtime Jubilee, or Ocean Breeze. That last one always confuses me. I’ve smelled the ocean many times, and I can tell you it smells nothing like that.

Both my kids have shown skin sensitivity to diapers that come out of the wash with a strong detergent fragrance. An extra rinse helps, but filling up the barrel again just to get rid of the perfumy smell is both expensive and not the most conservation wise option. 1/4 to 1/2 cup of liquid EnviroKlenz Laundry Enhancer brings my diapers out of the wash with that sweet smell of nothingness. A scent I know will be safe on my baby’s skin.

I like to use 1/4 cup in my pre-wash and 1/2 cup in my regular wash. I don’t really need that first dose, but like I said above, it does break down that nasty outhouse smell. My husband’s office is right next to the laundry room, and let’s just say he always knows when a diaper pre-wash cycle is running. This initial 1/4 cup is just a courtesy to him. And it’s been much appreciated these last few weeks!

And in case you were wondering, it hasn’t caused any staining or bleaching or damage to my beloved stash of fluff (because that would definitely be a deal breaker). I highly recommend EnviroKlenz Laundry Enhancer to cloth diapering families seeking that holy grail of diaper laundry smells—nothing.

So Sam’s cloth diaper laundry has been marvelously stink-free, and I’ve also had great success at getting my own laundry clean and odourless. You know that gross, sour smell that dishcloths get after a while? I used to have to use bleach to get that sour smell out, and then of course, they’d stink like bleach. Laundry Enhancer gets my dishcloths (and my hand towels, bath towels, and rags) clean-smelling again with no hazardous chemicals or extra rinses required. EnviroKlenz recommends their Laundry Enhancer for other tough smells like cigarette smoke, mildew, perfumes, and fragrances from detergents and fabric softeners.

Other Odours

You may remember our basement flooded last winter. Since the initial demolition, we’ve been slowly renovating it to bring it back to the way it was. It’s great to be getting things back to normal, but on top of the hefty price tag, we’ve also acquired that “new” chemical smell that permeates everything. If that smell gives me a headache, I don’t want to think about how it might affect my kids with their little bodies. I can’t exactly put my new floors in my washing machine though, so for situations like these, EnviroKlenz makes an Everyday Odor Neutralizer. I just dilute the concentrate (about 1:4) with clean tap water and spray to help get rid of VOCs and odours off-gassing from new walls, flooring, furniture, and fixtures quicker.

EnviroKlenz lists lots of other practical uses for their Everyday Odor Neutralizer:

  • Potty training right now? Kick that pee stink out of your floors or mattress.
  • Get rid of pet odours.
  • Get rid of new mattress smell.
  • Remove tobacco smoke smell from your car upholstery or furniture.

I love that EnviroKlenz’ odor neutralizer does what it says. It actually gets rid of odours safely and naturally instead of just covering them up with artificial scents. When it comes to my family’s well being, I won’t compromise.

  • This sounds amazing! We can definitely relate to the HE washer stink in our household with the regular fluff wash routine. Can’t wait to try it!

  • I have seen nor heard of EnviroKlenz Laundry Enhancer before, sounds like a great stink solver to me. I’ve always left the door of my washer open after doing a wash, I also always wipe out the seal to remove any water hovering there – it definitely helps to avoid a nasty smell arising. In Germany washing machines also had the possibility to empty the water completely by opening a small compartment at the front of the machine, removing a filter (amazing what collects on that and can cause a stink!) and opening a stopcock, this seems to be missing on machines here.

  • Sounds like a great product. The older I get the less I want to have artificial smells around . I’ll have to look for this product.

  • This would be a great product to use for eliminating bad odors. Even though I don’t have to wash diapers, I do recall soaking and pre-washing them and then putting in the washer. Sure was a lot of work.
