#MyLittleDreamer Has Big Dreams for Her Future! {Plus a Twitter Party & Contest Alert}

Remember when you were a kid and adulthood seemed so, so far away? It seemed like we had all the time in the world to decide what we wanted to do when we grew up. Our choices felt endless. All through my childhood, I would daydream about what I might become one day: maybe an actress, a psychologist, a bus driver, a teacher – anything!

I love that my kids’ dreams are limitless too. The other day I had a great conversation with my six-year-old. She changes her mind all the time, so I was curious about her current career aspirations. I knew she was ambitious, but I didn’t know the half of it! Here’s a little excerpt from our “interview”.

Me: Sweetie, what do you want to be when you grow up?
Lots and lots of things! I want to be a dentist, and play all the sports, and be a scientist, and a flower girl…

Me: That’s certainly is a lot of things! How will you do them all?
Well on Monday, I’ll be a dentist. A dentist just for kids.
On Tuesday, I’ll work at Costco and then play soccer.
On Wednesday, I’ll be a teacher.
On Thursday, I’ll be a scientist who studies dinosaurs.

Me: Do you remember what you call a scientist who studies dinosaurs?
A pay-lee-to-lo-gist.

Science World - run away

Me: That’s right! A paleontologist. And what will you do the day after that?
On Friday, I’ll be an artist.
On Saturday, a flower girl.

Me: Wait. What if there isn’t a wedding that week?
What do you mean?

Me: What if there isn’t a wedding for you to be a flower girl at?
No, I want to be a flower girl. You know, like plant flowers in the garden!

Me: Ohhh, I understand now. What about Sunday?
On Sunday, I’ll spend time with you and Daddy and Kay.

Me: Wow! That’s sounds really busy! I’m glad you’ll still have time to spend with us. When will you have time to sleep?
From midnight to three in the morning I’ll sleep.

Me: I see. How are you going to learn to do all of those things?
At school. I’m going to practice.

Me: How will you pay for school?
You’re going to pay for it. With your money.

Me: But don’t you think that might be expensive?
Yeah. But you have to do it. Because I don’t have any money, and you’re my mommy. Mommies help their kids.

Well, she’s got me there. Mommies (and daddies) do help their kids. But do you have any idea how much dentistry school, a PhD in paleontology, soccer camp, and art school are going to set us back? I don’t know the grand total, but I’m reasonably sure it’s a lot, and working at Costco on Tuesdays isn’t going to be much help!

Thankfully, we’ve been planning for the kids’ education since before they were born. We’ve been putting money aside every month into their RESP and taking advantage of all the government grants we can. We have two smart and ambitious girls who will need our help to achieve their goals. Tee might have to choose one career at a time, but with our help and with smart saving, I know she and her sister will both go far.

What do your little ones dream of being when they grow up?

  • What a cute! She certainly is ambitious. Mine told me she wanted to be a basketball playing veterinarian the other day. Hey, it could happen! 🙂
